Why You Should Get on a Content Schedule NOW!

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

If your business doesn’t already have a blog, chances are you have at least entertained the idea. Blogs come with many benefits and responsibility. Blogging is not easy and successful blogs come with a certain level of commitment. The more you put into your blog the more you can expect to get out of it.

Try your hardest to get on a content schedule. What I mean by content schedule is to determine your goals and how many weekly posts you expect it will take to meet these goals. A content schedule is your commitment. If you determine that two new posts a week will help your cause, then put it on your calendar to do so.

If you develop a conscious blogging strategy, you can reap some of the benefits below.

Long tail keywords

If you’re somewhat familiar with search engine optimization, you might already be familiar with the long tail of search. What this is in a nutshell are specific, highly targeted keywords. These keywords may not send a ton of traffic, but the clicks they generate can be very relevant and convert well. Individually the keywords have a low search volume, but if you rank well for a lot of them the combined search volume can be well worth your while. Long tail keywords are often less competitive too.

Blogs are a great tool to help you cover a lot of ground for long tail searches. Each new blog post is a new opportunity to have content that supports long tail searches. The beauty of blogs is you can often get long tail traffic without really even optimizing for it. Of course if you have a list of keywords to use then by all means use them, but your content alone will open doors you may not have even thought about. If you have been blogging for a while you have probably already noticed the traffic your posts have garnered from the search engines, a lot of it is probably from keywords you now rank for that you didn’t really think about at the time you wrote the posts.

Search engines love content

You might be tired of hearing “content is king” but this phrase is coined for a reason. Content is powerful. Search engine spiders love crawling new content. New content keeps your site fresh and the search engines coming back often to index your new pages. Having new pages indexed regularly will have a positive impact on your SEO efforts. Think of it this way, each new page is a potential doorway to your website and another opportunity for your brand to be found.

More inbound links

Blogs are a great way to earn new inbound links. Write good content and the links will come. This can happen a couple different ways. Your readers and visitors can share your content for you as well as bookmark your pages. You can do the same. It is a good best practice to share your content throughout your social network. Submit your blog posts to social voting sites like Digg, Mixx, Reddit etc. Also submit your posts to other social networking sites like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Each site your content is featured on is another opportunity for a new inbound link. As you might have heard, inbound links are kind of a big deal in SEO.

There are lots of benefits to blogging and blogging often. Look at what you have on your plate and work time into your schedule to site down and write new content on a weekly basis. Be consistent. If you commit to do a new post a week, then try your best to do so. Remember all the benefits of blogging. Encourage others in your organization to contribute as well. Having multiple contributing authors can really lighten everyone’s load and have a huge impact on the health of your blog and online marketing.

Why Blogging is a Good Idea for Business

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Blogging is very popular right now and for good reason. Having an active blog synced to your website can do great things for your online marketing such as keeping fresh content pumping in, providing additional opportunities for new inbound links, adds credibility to your business and can increase your overall traffic volume to not just your blog but to your website as well.

Fresh Content and Additional Pages

If you have heard anything on the SEO front then you have probably heard that Google and other search engines love fresh content. Having lots of content is good for so many reasons. Each post you write is another opportunity for you to have content that supports some of your targeted keywords. Even if you do not really put a conscious effort into optimizing your posts, you can and will most likely still get traffic from long tail searches.

Like I mentioned earlier, each post is a new page on your site. The more pages you have on your site the better. Also, with each page having it’s own opportunities to rank and send traffic, over time you will see steady traffic coming in to your various posts. It’s almost like free advertising.

Inbound Link Opportunities

One of the best ways to acquire inbound links is to give folks good reasons to link to you. Blogs are perfect for this because they can act as a giant online resource filled with useful information that other sites love to link to.

Blog content is a perfect match for social media. Blog content is fresh and timely and information like this often does well in social media. Frequent content gives you new opportunities to syndicate your information out to the various social networks you are involved in. This will build you a source of new inbound links. Search engines love social media links and these links often have a reputation of sending visitors along with it.

Credibility

Businesses that blog not only add more value but by doing this they earn additional credibility and authority. Blogging about your business and your industry positions you as an expert in your field. You get a platform to showcase your industry knowledge and experience and your readers receive a valuable resource of industry information.

Increased Traffic

This is a given. When you add extra content, links and social media, all this easily equates to increased traffic. The content and links will send you reoccurring organic traffic and social media provides instant traffic spurts. When you generate new content on a regular basis, you will enjoy the traffic benefits that come along.

Many businesses have already found the benefits and value in an active business blog. For those of you who are reading this that do not have a blog for your business, hopefully this post will encourage you to explore this idea further. If you have a blog, what are some challenges and successes that you have had so far?

What do you use your blog for?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Blogs and social media are hot buzz words right now. Many companies know that they should have a blog and get involved in social media but lack a real plan. So, your company decides that it needs to have a blog. Great, why?

Why do you want a blog?

Blogs can be powerful tools when used correctly. You probably already heard that which is why you want one. But you still have to answer the question as why you want a blog. Does your website need an outlet for more content? Are you looking to garner some inbound links? Do you want added exposure? To help sales? I could go on.

Essentially you should have this question answered BEFORE you begin building your blog. Why? Because you need to know your goals so you can outline a roadmap as to how to achieve them. There are many different ways to use a blog and knowing what you are going to use the blog for before you begin will save you time in the long run.

For example, if you are using the blog for additional content for your website, well then, your posts should be full of content. At least 400 words per post if you really want to get the benefits from the search engines. It would also behove you to do a little keyword research so you can properly optimize your articles as well. If you are looking for added exposure, you would want to incorporate social media sharing options throughout your blog. You would also want to get involved in social media so you can promote your content throughout the social networks.

Who are you writing for?

This is important. You should know your audience or target audience. Just like in sales where you want to know your customer, in blogging, you want to know your reader. Find out what they are interested in and the best ways to communicate with them. This being said, find out what social media outlets they spend time on and try to network with them on those networks. Writing for your readers encourages reader engagement and will help your content spread.

Be sure to listen to your readers as well. Encourage comments and listen to your readers feedback, both positive and negative. This will help inspire you to write more and match your topics to what your readers are interested in.

Don’t leave any stone unturned

Blogs are highly customizable. There are many resources out there to help you integrate social media sharing, promote following you on various social networks, increase engagement and subscribers and even sell products. If you use WordPress (which I highly recommend!), there are an abundance of free plugins to enhance your blog.

All this being said, if you are on the fence about installing a blog for your business/website, then stop thinking and do it. Just be sure not to just mindlessly add a blog. Just like building anything else, you need a plan.
