5 Online Marketing Ideas to Start your New Year off Right

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

It’s a new year and I’m assuming you have some new business goals. I’m even willing to bet that some of those goals have something to do with your website. Am I right? If so, here are 5 ideas to get your online marketing off to a great start.

Audit your calls-to-action - What do you want your website visitors to do? Contact you right? Are you making it easy for visitors to do this? If you have to think about it chances are they could be improved. Every page on your site should have a prominent call-to-action. This should include your telephone number as well as some sort of contact form or at least a link to a form. Don’t just have a contact page on your site and think that is all you need. You only have a short period of time to convert your visitors and if they have to look for a way to contact you, many will not.

Add a sitemap - Not only do you want to make it easy for your visitors to navigate through your website, but it is important the search engines can easily crawl your site as well. One of the easiest ways to address this is with a sitemap.

Start a blog - The two biggest things from an SEO standpoint are content and inbound links. A blog can help with both of these if you work it right. Try to get yourself on a blogging schedule of at least one new post a week. Be sure to share your content out through social media to attract new inbound links.

Start link building - As mentioned above, content and links are what will carry you the most in the search engines. Try to be conscious of your inbound links and find ways to attract more new links. It is best to get relevant industry links when possible.

Employ lead nurturing - Every industry will have a different sales cycle. For those that have a longer sales cycle, lead nurturing is essential. There are many things you can do to keep your brand in front of your prospects. One easy way is through marketing drip automation. Drip campaigns are a great way to keep communication open without necessarily eating-up a lot of time.

Now you have a short list of things that can have a huge impact on your online marketing. So, what are you waiting for? Go start the new year off right and complete what is on this list. Good luck!

Do You Know Where You Want To Be?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

So, the first of the year is only a few days away. You probably have BIG plans for your website and business this year. You may plan on devoting more time and money to promoting your business online this year. You probably have some high online marketing goals that you are setting now, like search engine ranking goals. If you do, what do you REALLY know about where you want to be?

Competition

You probably have a list of keywords that you want to rank “first page” for. Have you done some searches to see who is there? There are several things you will want to look for:

  • Are the results relevant to your business?
  • Who is currently there?
  • What are your competitor stats?

Relevancy

You know your business. You may think you know what terms are good to rank for, you may even be right. But a good practice is to actually do the searches and see who is there. Just because you associate certain terms with your business, the general public may not. You could be surprised when you do some searches and see that some of the keywords you thought were money could potentially put you in bad company. Just be sure to check and ensure that the keywords you target are relevant to your business.

Competitor Analysis

It’s VERY important to know who is there and why. There is only so much real estate on the first page of any search engine results page. Below are some important things to look for:

  • How old are the domains currently on page 1?
  • How many inbound links do they have?
  • How many pages indexed do they have?
  • How are they setting-up their pages?
  • How is their domain structured?

These are the basics that you will want to analyze. This will help you determine what you may need to do in order to achieve the online results of your competitors. RhinoSEO makes it quick and easy to check these competitor analysis stats. You can take this data and set certain benchmarks that may need to be met in order to knock off a competitor and take their place on the coveted first page.

There is only so much space on the first page of the search engine results pages. It’s important to know who is there and what it may take for you to get there. Research and competitor analysis is the perfect place to begin any successful online marketing campaign.

How to Repurpose Content for Maximum Efficiency

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Let’s face it, as much as us marketing folks preach ongoing content creation for various promotions, not everyone has the time. So how can a company pump out a blog post, press release and an e-newsletter all in one week? I think you might be seeing where I’m going with this.

The need to repurpose

Companies are busy and often understaffed, many want to be everywhere and do everything, but simply do not have the time. A great way to maximize the content you do produce is to repurpose. Now, this might not be appropriate in every occasion, but it is great when you can pull it off. One example is big company news. Let’s say you just released a new or improved product and you want to let everyone know about it. A good plan would be to announce the news in a press release, in a blog post and through an e-newsletter.

Think ahead when developing content

If you put a little thought into your content ahead of time, you can think of a a way to write it so it will be appropriate across several mediums.

5 Ideas to get you started

Below are some ideas of content that you might be creating and how you can maximize it by repurposing:

  • A good place to start for company news is with the press release. Once this copy is finalized, you can add it as a new blog post and add it into your email as well. This gives you three opportunities to broadcast your news to different audiences from only writing once.
  • If you recently hosted a webinar, you can take your slides and add them to your blog, send out an email with the link to the blog and even add the slides to Slideshare and Flickr.
  • Break-up a recent long article, ebook or whitepaper into blog posts.
  • On the flip side, you can take a series of current blog posts and turn them into an ebook.
  • Take snippets out of any pre-existing content and share them on Twitter and Facebook. This should supply you with a list of updates!

As everyone knows, savvy marketers and businesses don’t work harder, they work smarter!

Do You Optimize Your Website for Leads?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Increase Conversion RateYou hear so much about people optimizing their website for the search engines. That is a good idea and I encourage that, but you must keep in mind that the search engines are not the ones who will become customers, people are. So, that being said, is your website optimized for humans and lead conversions as well? Making onsite adjustments can do wonders to increase your conversion rate.

What do you want your visitors to do?

This might seem kind of obvious, but surprising enough there are a lot of websites out there that make it hard to find a telephone number or a contact form. If your only call-to-action is the contact us tab in your navigation and telephone number in your footer, you’re probably converting a small percentage of visitors to leads and are literally leaving potential business on the table.

Think about the way you present your information and how a visitor would potentially navigate around your website. Next, think about how you would like them to navigate around your website. Start making adjustments to provide the information visitors seek while leading them through your desired path or funnel.

Calls-to-action

As I mentioned earlier, if your only means of obtaining a lead on your website is through your contact us tab and page, then you are most likely not converting the visitors you worked so hard to get into leads.

There are many ways to add calls-to-actions to your site. You can add a graphic, short form or hyperlinks on each page that prompts your visitor to take one more step to get more information. Be sure to have graphics link to a short web form. I say short because if you try to ask for to much information, visitors will bounce. Try to keep your forms simple by only asking basic information. People are more likely to give up their name and email but not likely to give up a long form full of requests.

Your content and imagery is what is potentially “selling” the visitor on what you offer. If your copy and imagery are well-done, you’ll have an interested visitor. Make it fast and easy for them to obtain more information.

Give stuff away

Another popular avenue is to give things away in exchange for information. You can offer case studies, white papers, ebooks, free trials etc. on your website. Offer these in exchange for a name and email address. Once you have a little information from them, you can begin to add them to your email list (be sure to stay CAN-SPAM compliant). Taylor custom email campaigns around your forms so that you can nurture the lead and increase your chances of converting them into a customer.

SEO is important, very important, but consciously optimizing your site to maximize conversions is smart and important. A well optimized site for search and for conversions will transform your website from an online brochure to a 24 hour sales person.

Taking Control of Your Web Presence

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

We have seen it time and time again as web developers. Website owners also know this situation very well.

A person has decided to change their website. (The change also means changing service providers.) The headache comes when most website owners find that the service provider also hosts their website. Not only that, but many times it is built using a proprietary CMS that risks hindering the website should it be moved.

So now a string of questions must be asked, solved, and action taken just to access the information needed. Hours are wasted, money spent, and nothing has happened except switching service providers.

We have always aimed to solve this problem once and for all for clients. (Atleast the headache part of it). As a website owner, your web presence is crucial to business operations. Why should you allow service providers to control the stability of that?

Hosting
First let’s look at hosting. It is necessary for a website owner to own and control their own hosting environment. Many times, you can find fully supported hosting providers with rates at a fraction of the cost of what your service provider up-sells to you. Sure you might still need someone to service the website, but what you have done is eliminated the middle man between you and your website. If you need to change service providers, it is as simple as calling a new firm and giving them access.

CMS
Many firms sell their services based on the convenience factor of having an all in one Content Management System. You don’t need to do anything. You host with them, use their editing tools to make changes and you have to do very little. What they usually don’t tell you is that your website will be put on a generic template system that will make it look almost identical to every other site they have on the system. Your website is unique and needs to be expressed that way. Something else that you might not see before signing up is the captive nature of the content edited on the system. If you decided to upgrade your site, you have run into a very troublesome situation. What if you want to move to another service provider? Good luck with the transition. It will cost many hours to change for your new needs.

This is where WordPress comes in. This solves the issues created by using locked in ‘all-in-one’ website systems. Not only can you control your website hosting, but you can run it on what is easily the most recognized CMS on the planet. Plus it’s FREE!!

So we have already identified the freedom you get by going this route. Are there other advantages? Sure! WordPress is backed by a large community. It has thousands of plugins that will enhance the usability of your website. It can take care of anything and everything a generic proprietary system can minus the costs.

You then have the ability to take the code, database, and your website freely to any hosting provider. You own and control it all.

These are the problems RhinoSEO identifies and tackles with a client’s best interests in mind. It is important to spot potential ‘lock in’ offerings that are aimed at bettering the service provider’s bottom line. Don’t pay for convenience. Pay for control and the same conveniences come with it. Stop the vicious cycle of headaches caused by changing services providers.

You will thank yourself for the decision later!

Who can identify with the problems addressed in this post?

Do You Know Where Your Leads Come From?

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Let’s face it, the main motive behind online marketing is to generate something. Depending on your business, it could be to generate leads, sales, traffic for ads etc. That being said, once you get a lead, what do you do?

Tracking

If you have spent time and money on SEO or any other type of online marketing, you have prepped your website to become another salesperson. In any sales organization, sales people are measured by their performance. You should have the same set-up for your online marketing.

You most likely have some type of web analytics you use. It tells you all kinds of cool stuff about your visitors, but is it set-up to tell you about your leads? Most analytics have a way to set-up some sort of lead tracking. In Google Analytics you would want to configure your goals and funnels so you can go back and learn more about your leads. If you use RhinoSEO, you have a lead management system built-in.

You want to have a way to look at how your visitors became leads.

Analyze

It is important to learn from your leads and analytics. When you are lucky enough to get new web leads, take a minute to analyze how they became a lead. Some of the things you’ll want to look at are:

  • Referring source
  • Visitor navigation
  • Visitor frequency

Referring source is probably the main thing you will want to look at. This can give you a lot of insight as to how people are finding your site. This give you the opportunity to evaluate how well your online marketing efforts are working. It can also shed some light into how your prospects search or which inbound links are sending you quality traffic.

This information can help you tailor your online marketing strategy around what works instead of wasting time on what doesn’t. Find what is working and why and do your best to replicate it.

Visitor navigation tells you what your prospects and leads are most interested in. You can see what product/services were most viewed and for how long. This will help you custom tailor your sales pitch and drip marketing around what you know they like.

Visitor frequency is how many times someone visits your site. Find out more about your online sales cycle. People might visit 2-3 times before they fill out a form. Make on site tweaks and monitor if you can shorten the amount of visits it takes before they convert into a lead.

The more you learn about how visitors become leads, the more successful your online marketing and conversions will become.

Add diversity to your online marketing campaigns and you’ll notice a steady stream of web traffic coming from multiple sources.
